Knowledge Engineer - telecomute

Knowledge Engineer – Telecommuting position
Will serve as a Knowledge Engineer for an Internet based tutoring service. Knowledge Engineers will be asked to complete 2 tasks for an education project.
First, Knowledge Engineers will interview teachers (mostly middle and high school teachers) to learn the concepts that students must master in order to demonstrate proficiency of their state's educational standards.
Second, Knowledge Engineers will translate these concepts into a knowledge model. Knowledge Engineers will be provided an Artificial Intelligence shell and instructed in how to add concepts to the shell's database.
Knowledge Engineers will interact with instructional designers and programmers to make sure that an adaptive computer-based educational system provides students the appropriate instructional guidance at the appropriate time.
Desirable technical attributes for Knowledge Engineers: 1. Are familiar with cognitive science. For example, Knowledge Engineers should understand what semantic nets, mental models, and productions rules refer to.
2. Can elicit knowledge from experts. Many Knowledge Engineers will have followed some interviewing methodology. It's more complicated than asking the expert, "What do you know?"
3. Are familiar with computer representations of knowledge. Knowledge Engineers will have to use knowledge representation involving objects and slots.
4. Are familiar with instructional systems. Knowledge Engineers should be familiar with instructional goals, scenario-based instruction, and educational standards.
5. Experience in developing expert systems / Artificial Intelligence; instructional systems design and task analysis; or cognitive analysis are also desired.
Two characteristics for Knowledge Engineers: 1. Flexibility. Each Knowledge Engineer is likely to have a representation scheme that he or she thinks best fits people's true mental structure. However, Knowledge Engineers will have to build knowledge representations that conform to the structures and practices that have proven effective in creating effective tutoring with ITS.
2. Teamwork. We will all be working to build the most effective system we can in a limited amount of time. This means that everyone will need to be results-focused. Knowledge Engineer should contribute insights to the product we are trying to build during product design, and Knowledge Engineer should construct the knowledge representations that we have decided to build during product execution.
No relocation is required, as this is a telecommuting position.
